Product Regulation and Metrology Act 2025
2025 c. 20
The Act lets ministers make product rules by regulation, including product information, online marketplace duties, traceability and rules that copy EU law for environmental purposes. The government has consulted on 'digital by default' product information and asked for evidence on UK digital product records, but has not decided its approach for Great Britain.
Who is covered
Once rules are made: producers, onward suppliers, online marketplaces, authorised representatives. Food, medicines, medical devices, aircraft and some other products are excluded.
Your duties
- No direct duties yet
- Proposed: product information digital by default, kept available for the product's expected life
- Proposed: online listings show seller details, product identifier, warnings and compliance marks
- Proposed: use the same data carriers (QR, NFC, RFID) as the EU digital product passport
Product data it needs
- Product identifier
- Producer name and contact; UK responsible person for high-risk products
- Digital safety information and its web address or data carrier
- Compliance marking
Great Britain and Northern Ireland
The Act covers the whole UK; in Northern Ireland the EU rules (GPSR, ESPR, Battery Regulation) apply directly.
How xProduct helps
- Passports with QR and NFC data carriers that already follow the EU rules
